Construction and landscape

Necessity and shortage of available resources, are, as it happens worldwide, the two main developers of popular architecture.
With few materiales, mainly stone and wood, and the necessity to struggle against humidity and rain, very interesting domestic architectures were created with a vast typologic range.
Hórreos (raised granaries), cruceiros (stone cruises), galleries, large stone walls, fine slate and tiled roofs, form the main part of our traditional landscape. The 70’s disconnection with the landscape has resulted in a very contradictory landscape where concrete has prevailed as the dominant material during the last 30 years. Nowadays, we have a very important traditional refurbishment culture and Galicia has been awarded in Europe regarding regeneration actions in traditional little towns and cities as Santiago de Compostela.

From the Spanish global number of population settlements of 60.000, over 30.000 are located in Galicia, where 1.300 units are completely uninhabited.
By wandering around these sites it is possible to travel back through time and understand how the past relation between buildings and natural landscape was much deeper: from construction itself to water management, customs and even to the adaptation of all these in the modern life.
